Detailed presentation of the DIAANA Software

The software "Diaana" (Diagnosis and Anamnesis Assistant) is a support to the medical consultation. It is intended to help the doctor meet the challenge of being more efficient. On the basis of an interactive questionnaire completed by the patient before the consultation, the doctor instantly obtains an exhaustive anamnesis focused on the problem and a panel of differential diagnoses of very high sensitivity.

The artificial reasoning system of "Diaana" is similar to a doctor with the latest medical knowledge in the field concerned and protected from the distractions and biases of a traditional consultation. The information transmitted takes a natural form for a physician user: a summary of anamnesis centered on the relevant elements emerging from the questionnaire, as well as a list of possible diagnoses with their level of urgency, the presenting factors and information complementary measures for optimal care. With all the necessary elements to establish the urgency of the consultation and support its reasoning diagnosis, the doctor can perform his task in the best conditions, without the system being a substitute for him.

The use of "Diaana" significantly reduces the errors and errors associated with oral history and heuristic diagnosis. By exploring in parallel all the possible symptoms, "Diaana". It has the advantage, compared to conventional "symptom checkers", to rule out the risk of early diagnosis closure. The development of the anamnesis and the choice of questions depends on the completeness of the potential triggers and not on a given symptom or event. These qualities are reflected in the facts since, at the University Hospitals of Geneva (HUG), we have demonstrated by means of a randomized clinical trial that, according to the complexity of the cases, the use of "Diaana" allows the medical users to catch up 40 to 70% of differential diagnoses omitted.

As evidenced by the great satisfaction of patient users at HUG (all patients are "satisfied" or "very satisfied"), the gains offered by "Diaana" from the medical point of view are not obtained at the expense of human character of the doctor-patient relationship. The time spent in front of a screen filling out the questionnaire not only allows the patient to feel positively associated with his care, but can above all be reinvested in a more personalized interview with the doctor.

Finally, the use of "Diaana" represents a significant gain in efficiency in that it reduces the time invested by the doctor:

- in the repetitive parts of the anamnesis (so he can concentrate on the important details)

- on the writing of this last one (the organized text produced by "Diaana" is directly transferable in the file of the patient) and

- on the search for information or opinion on the case ("Diaana" provides a large amount of information otherwise obtained via books, internet or the opinion of colleagues).

This saving of time in the administrative tasks is all the more essential that it can be reinvested in the clinical examination, as well as the patient-doctor relationship, if necessary and unfortunately often neglected nowadays.
